A view of Madison, WI's capitol building at the end of State Street

Major Neighborhoods in Madison

One of the first things that likely comes to mind when you think of Madison is the lakes. And you’d be right! The city is settled directly between Mendota and Monoa lakes, and three more are nearby. The second thing you think of might be cheese or beer, and you can absolutely look forward to annual events like Great Taste of the Midwest. But a lesser-known gem of the city is its architecture. It’s home to both the iconic domed Wisconsin State Capitol building, built with over 40 types of stone, and the Monona Terrace, a stunning lakefront structure designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Whether it's the sparkling waterfronts, the good food, or the landmarks that draw you here, know that local movers can help make your relocation a breeze.

Downtown Madison

Downtown is the heart of the city in more ways than one. It serves as the central district for entertainment, food, and experiences, but it also contains a lot of major thoroughfares that act as arteries to the rest of the city. Namely, State Street, a locally beloved “pedestrian mall” that connects the capitol to the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. You can visit tons of resturants, museums, and shops along it, or venture off the path and head to the Olbrich Botanical Gardens, home to 16 acres of sprawling gardens and beautiful structures. Or stop by the Dane County Farmer’s Market, which hosts nearly 260 vendors all year round.

Near East Side

The Near East Side neighborhood is a lively area that’s packed with amenities just a few blocks from downtown. So what’s the difference? You’ll hear locals call Near East Side a little more bohemian or “funky”, likely due to the eclectic mash of historic homes next to modern condos and apartments. And because of the unique local venues and resturants, like Ogden’s North Street Diner which serves classic American breakfast and lunch. Or the North Street Cabaret, a venue so cozy you can enjoy live music, comedy, and other performances from practically anywhere you sit. You can even. take your pup for an off-leash stroll at Demetral Park.

West Side

The West Side neighborhood features mostly single-family homes and condos, and has a more suburban feel than its eastern siblings as a result. This is a perk if you’re the type who likes the quieter atmosphere while being close to amenities, but there are plenty of things to do and see in the area already. Summertime is perfect for renting a boat to cruise Lake Wingra, or you could visit the Henry Vilas Zoo to say hello to a plethora of unique animals. If shopping is more your thing, check out Monroe Street, dotted with many locally owned shops, or stop by Hilldale Mall for some upscale retail browsing and fine dining.

University Heights

With a name like University Heights, you’d expect it to be practically on campus. And that’s partly true — the university is so large, only its western edge sits at the head of this neighborhood. It’s within walking distance of Lake Mendota, and the historic single-family homes are popular with tenured and retired professors. The area is also home to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Gilmore House and many other buildings designed by famous local architects. There are plenty of local shops to frequent, like the Regent Market Co-Op, or favorite resident eateries like Blue Moon, which serves up burgers and a fantastic beer selection.

The 2 young men that moved everything from my 16' POD to new addition were quick, efficient, allowed for my input, and were very courteous. They took about 1 1/2 hours to move large pieces of furniture into home and put all other boxes in garage. Would recommend, on time, neat.
