The Cost of Moving Services in Richmond, VA

Moving costs in Richmond, VA, vary depending on the season, how much stuff you're moving, and the type of help you need.

Full-service movers cost more, but they provide the full package: they load, transport, and unload your belongings using their own truck. Labor-only movers are a more affordable option. They do the heavy lifting—loading and unloading your items—but you’ll need to rent, drive, and return the moving truck yourself.

Review the table below for an idea of what moving quotes might look like in Richmond.

The Cost of Labor-Only Movers in Richmond

Did you know? More than 1 out of 3 HireAHelper customers who select our labor-only moving service use the help to load or unload their PODS container.

You pay labor-only movers by the hour to help with the physical part of your move, such as loading or unloading your belongings. They charge an average of $92.73 per hour, and costs go up depending on how much help you need.

Because of demand fluctuations, timing also impacts labor-only moving quotes. Weekends may cost more, while moves scheduled on a Monday or in July tend to be more affordable. Summer months are usually the priciest time to move.

The Cost of a Local Full-Service Move in Richmond

Full-service movers handle loading, transportation, and unloading for you. The average cost is $794.36, so it’s more expensive than labor-only help, but it's ideal if you want a convenient, hands-off move without renting or driving a truck—perfect for those willing to pay more for ease.

Full-service moving costs follow the same trends for peak times as labor-only moves. You'll typically pay more in the summer or on weekends, while moves on Monday or during July are less expensive and have lower demand.

After I made 2 calls, they arrived 7 minutes at the end of the hour window. They needed to get back to the previous job so were fast. Too fast. Stacked all the boxes in one room most upside down, left mattresses fallen over, and dropped the bedroom dresser, causing damage. Not super happy but they were better than the departure help so gave them 4 stars.

The crew came on time and was courteous. We had some heavy furniture and they managed to carry them one flight down and one flight up with caution. They borrowed our moving straps. They did not have those handy. Other than that I would recommend Hire A Helper. They were fast and professional and I was so glad the company was able to schedule an appt the next day.

Real Advice from Richmond Movers

We asked local movers about what you should know about moving in Richmond. (They’re really nice!)

"If you're in Richmond city, make sure you double check street signs. It can get really tricky and there are lots of no parking zones to abide by along with specific parking times. If you're moving from out of state use the google map to check the area or if you're local drive by the place a few times to get the scope of it."

HireAHelper's Moving Guide for Richmond

Tip 1: Check Your New Neighborhood for Parking Restrictions

Many of Richmond's historical neighborhoods have parking restrictions to preserve the area's aesthetic and integrity, and to ensure residents have access to parking. If you're moving to areas such as Historic Jackson Ward, the Fan District, or the Carver Residential District, you'll need to purchase parking permits for your vehicles.

Bonus tip: You can get a moving permit to secure a parking spot for your moving truck for loading or unloading—just be sure to apply at least 3 days before your move.

Tip 2: Plan Around Major Festivals and Events

Throughout the year, Richmond hosts events that attract tens of thousands of visitors to the city. When possible, avoid moving during major events, such as Dominion Energy Riverrock, the 2nd Street Festival, or the Richmond Folk Festival, as heavy crowds and road closures could make loading, unloading, or navigating the city more difficult.

Bonus tip: Check the Richmond events calendar for happenings before you choose a moving day to ensure your move is as efficient as possible.

Tip 3: Avoid the Worst Traffic

Try to plan a moving route that keeps you off of Richmond's busiest roads, no matter the time of day. Use a traffic app such as Google Maps or Waze to check real-time congestion and reroute as needed. Heavily trafficked roads to avoid:

  • I-95, especially near downtown
  • I-65, especially near the Short Pump and Mechanicsville exits
  • The Downtown Expressway
  • Broad Street near VCU or the Fan District
  • The Midlothian Turnpike
  • The Petersburg Turnpike
Bonus tip: Avoid weekday rush hour traffic by loading or unloading from 7-9 am and 4-6 pm.
