Old Dominion Freight Line® Reviews
Dave at the drop off point in Rockville MD and Ambrosio at the receiving end in Austin TX were prompt, experienced, courteous and very helpful. I would recommend both CDL drivers again without reservation. The only downside was the inability of the company to provide a crew to unload the trailer. We had to cancel that portion of the contract and hire our own from a local firm. Mark Beames
Great company with great service. From the girls at the main office to the local warehouse where I stored my belongings on a trailer for 2 months, to the drivers that I dealt with, overall it was an excellent experience. And for a out of state or cross country move I highly recommend using OD along with local loading and unloading companies through Hire A Helper as a less expensive alternative to hiring one moving company for the whole job. OD provided the trailer and drove it to it's destination. They also stored my items on the trailer at a local warehouse near my new home for 2 months for a very reasonable price. The local moving companies did the loading and unloading on either end. So you're paying 3 different companies for their services- but I believe in the end you're getting better service for less money.
I originally intended to use a container company but since it was not available at my destination I had to use a trailer company, and I was glad I picked Old Dominion. They were on time, very professional and placed the trailer in the best spot to load my household goods. The dispatcher, Jess at the Chesapeake Virginia terminal was particularly helpful and accommodating. He arranged an early pickup on very short notice and the whole process from beginning to end was highly professional. I was able to arrange a guaranteed delivery date and live offload at very reasonable prices. Everything about this process was easily arranged providing a stress free experience that I was not expecting. I would highly recommend this company to anyone considering shipping household goods.
This is a great way to move! You pack and load everything yourself and they haul the trailer for you and deliver it at the new address. They even provide the ramp, hand cart and tie-down straps. (The load bars in the trailers are also extremely useful.) Each one of the drivers were very helpful and courteous and just a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend UPack/Old Dominion.
Most cost effective way to move across the country. Got quotes for up to $12,000 from traditional movers. Spent only $3500 on this trailer. Just remember to use "reputable" mover labor to assist in packing the trailer properly. Even with labor, I was still just over 1/3 the cost of regular moving companies.
I have mixed feelings about my experience renting space on a trailer. I booked 5' through 1-800-Pack-Rat, which meant dealing with Forward Relocation (a NJ subsidiary, I gather), and then an Old Dominion trailer showed up the day of. I was never informed about this chain of companies, and therefore I was never clear about which company I was dealing with and who was ultimately responsible for my move if something went wrong. There were implications for the flow of information - the drivers had the wrong address at BOTH locations, despite me bringing this error to the attention of the coordinator. At my destination the driver also received bad directions from the coordinator, he told me, despite my advanced caution about major renovations on the main boulevards. I don't know if that was an omission on the part of Forward Relocation or Old Dominion. Either way, there are clearly unfortunate gaps in communication. At both pick-up and drop-off the drivers were supposed to call an hour before. That didn't happen. However, to their credit, the trailer always arrived at the early end of the time window, which was much appreciated. The drivers at either end were really nice guys, who patiently took the time to park carefully and make sure that everything was in order. The trailer was clean and empty when I loaded it, and clean and empty save for my things once it was delivered. They provided a hand truck, which was appreciated. The ramp was tricky, but worked. After the trailer was filled, the driver who picked it up tagged the divider and filled out the paperwork, which I signed, noting I only used 4' of space. (Hooray to my excellent movers - that should have given me a $91 price break). However, the company (Old Dominion? Forward Relocation?) sharply contested this - saying I used 6' of space, measured once the trailer got to its hub. I was angry. They did not honor the 4' documented, instead conceding me no extra cost for the use of that extra foot they say I used (my estimate was for 5'). Not cool. It makes me leery to use them again since there is no clear mechanism for me as the client to witness the final space tally - which came as news to me, since the driver had carefully measured the space in front of me only to have that corrected afterwards. That's a huge buyer beware.
Working with Old Dominion has been a comedy of errors. I chose them because they specifically mentioned that they charged only for the space that we would need and since we weren't moving furniture or appliances this was a better alternative to PODs and uHaul or similar. They also were able to drop a trailer for us to load and then pick up the loaded trailer later the same day which they call Live Loading. Booking online was easy and smooth. The challenges started the night before my move was scheduled. They called me at 5:20 the night before my move to schedule the time, I called back at 5:30 and no one at the DC was able to help me and instructed me to call back the following morning. When I called back in the morning, I was told that I needed to give 24 hours notice and that my move would need to be scheduled for the next business day which would have been the Tuesday after Memorial day. This was problematic on multiple fronts, I was scheduled to fly out to California on that Tuesday where I was permanently relocating and I had been calling them daily the week of my move to coordinate times and each time I called, I was told that I would be contacted to schedule a time. Eventually after speaking with a supervisor a driver was dispatched as had been originally schedule. The driver, Jose was professional and helped calm me down after a morning of miscommunication and f- ups. I don't plan to move cross-country again anytime soon, but if I were to do another cross country move, I don't know that I'd hire Old Dominion again.
Ecellent job from Wyoming to California. Delivery and pickup was as expected in both WY and CA. Drivers as well as Management were nice, efficient and answered all my questions. I was not worried about my stuff in anyway while it was in transit, because of their security measures. I will use and recommend Old Dominion anytime. Thank you guys.
Old Dominion Household Services was by far the most cost efficient method of moving for my family. We looked into renting a Penske Truck but the cost of the truck, estimated fuel cost, lodging for the trip, meals while traveling and the wear and tear on my 64 year old body from driving the truck 1200 miles, made Old Dominion Household Services my best alternative
I actually used pack rat who utilized an old dominion trailer for the move as they did not have containers that serviced the area. It was a great experience and saved me a lot of money by paying by the linear foot and utilizing their recommended movers on both ends. I actually utilized less room than expected and the move ended up costing about 1/3 of what moving companies were trying to charge. It was a little more hassle on my part in trying to coordinate the independent movers with the truck, etc. but well worth the extra time to save a good chunk of money. I would absolutely recommend utilizing their services for long distance moves!
Really great way to move as you pay by the foot. If you have really valuable furniture, pack and pad it well as it is a tracker trailer and little wheels and such are likely to be broken just due to the bumps of the road. Will be the only way I long distance travel as it was the cheapest and the quickest! I will say though: you have to stay organized and on top of your own scheduling and ensuring appropriate communication and payment as they seem to have a very splintered way of handling the setup/billing/delivery. Nothing too daunting, just pay attention!
Worst customer service ever! After we reserved a truck, 6 weeks in advance, they called and told us our trailer wouldn't be dropped off for several days! That was unacceptable as we were on a moving timeline, after several phone calls, we finally got our truck. However, they hung up on us several times claiming they did not have our reservation! So unprofessional! Then, after they picked up our truck, they LOST our truck and claimed to not have it! After several more phone calls and several more hang ups from them, they finally FOUND our truck! Do not use Old Dominion!!! You will not be happy with their service!
