Disclaimer: The workers were at no time verbally disrespectful or discourteous.
The onset of the move went as expected. They got the lay of he property, the instructions on what was to go where; and the insight on how everything was labeled and to be matched with the labels that were at the unload location.
The loading started. We were about 45m in; and then, the ´interesting´ began. One of the movers disappeared. At $115/hr I want to know where you are, and what you're doing; on my dime. It was stated, ¨he's in the bathroom¨. At no time was I asked if anyone could use my facilities! I considered this to be socially egregious. I didn't lambaste them, giving to their youth as a reason for the lack in social graces. I just allowed them to keep working.
Shortly after that, I was upstairs taking care of another issue, when coming into the upper level of the foyer, I look to see one of the movers riding my elliptical. I know... who does that? Had he been hurt, who would have been responsible? I said nothing, as to not create a hostile environment. I am certain, you are asking, 'why aren't you saying something'? I am a retired U. S. Marine with no in between. Once the engine starts, I go from 0 to 120, and that's just 2nd gear.
They are allowed to continue to work themselves out of their tips. Yes, that's right. I had a set tip for each person prior to them beginning. Once the loading was complete, I noticed that many of the boxes that were set for the first location, was not loaded. It was stated,by the lead, "it's okay. We left all of the delicate items for the second trip". This would have been fine, had the second trip not caused the such confusion, but I digress.
Please know, that every box was labeled and numbered to corresponding labels on the rooms at the unload location. This didn't happen only if it was so obvious, that a 3rd grader could figure it out. For instance; if there is a printer, in an office that you were shown earlier, it should not have to be marked "office" to know that it goes in the "office" not the "craft room". This happen on several instances. Plainly marked boxes put in the wrong locations. A full filing cabinet left laying on it's side; while the base was left in the craft room.
While unloading in process, one of the movers asked if I lived there alone. Weird and creepy! I responded, " no I stay with a few friends, Their names are Smith, Wesson, and Mike; but I call him Nine. He didn't understand what I meant. One of the other ones explained what I meant. He says, "oh, you have weapons. Can we see them?' I responded with a resounding, "NO!". Why would I show you my weapons? That's foolish! He went further to say, "well, we moved a guy a couple weeks ago who had guns, and he was showing them to us; he let us hold them and everything". I stated, 'he is a fool. He said, "no he was a cop". As if that made it okay. I said, "he was a foolish cop". He re[lied, anyway, he let us see them, and we didn't kill him or nothing". REALLY!?!?
During this unloading, one of the movers disappeared for about 10 minutes? I asked wear he was. It was noted that he was in the bathroom. Again, this is my home, and no one (NO ONE) asked if they could use MY facilities. RUDE! Mind you, I raised males, You know what it's like when they go. Air freshener/fans do nothing! You still know. After 10-15m with my exhaust fan running; nothing. Not even a hint of air freshener. So now, I am paying $115/hr for you to fake go, and you are increasing my light bill. WOW!
On the loading, two bookshelves were disassembled, that didn't need to be disassembled. A complete layout of where furnishing were supposed to be placed, was shown to the lead. The shelves were not reassembled and placed flushed against each other, with the shelves laying on the filing cabinet, that was left on it's side. Come to find later it was broken beyond repair!
A large glass tabletop was brought to the wrong location. Had a real hard time getting it to the correct location.
A door was removed to get a love seat into the sitting area of the master suite. It still would not fit. They never put the door back on, and didn't inform me as to where the hinge pins were. I tried to call them, but they never picked up the phone; or called back.
Damaged my headboard; bid gash in the wood. Damaged a mid century dresser. Found fragile boxes upside down; with 'this side up'/arrows plainly displayed. Heavy boxes in the wrong place.Even after all of this, I remained calm. I need this to be over, as time and my money is spent. after the final unload, I asked for a "favor" since they had to go back to the loading point to retrieve their dolly. I asked if they could follow me to U'Haul to turn in the truck. It is on the way, and only 1.3 miles from where they are going.
He +'d that time to the invoice. Okay. So much for the $100 tip you each would've gotten! Unprofessional, no social graces. Need CS training! More to say, fresh out of letters though
