Budget® Reviews
THe truck had a faulty tire on right outside rear but they were able to fix right away with roadside assistance. Truck drove well and we arrived safe. THere is an issue though with those trucks not filling up to full at the gas stations due to how the gas goes down. Many could easily fall to that $35 dollar charge for not being at full because of how they are made. We had to fill up thee times and the last have the employee go with us to make sure the turck was full. That is why there wa not a higher score on the review.
Honestly, I'm not pleased at all with Budget. There are several things that weren't as I would have liked them, so I'm just going to list them. First of all, the cost. My partner and I needed to change the time of our reservation due to the incoming shutdown of Washington state due to COVID. To change the date of our move, Budget was going to charge us an extra $400. In the end, we just made a new reservation under my name instead of my partners, and didn't have to pay extra, meaning that the extra cost was just a completely unnecessary charge to begin with. Second, also regarding the cost, the quote that you get on the Budget website isn't the actual price. There was an extra $300 mandatory insurance charge that we didn't find out about until we went to go pick up the truck. Luckily, we had extra in our moving budget, but I can imagine that some folks would be completely blindsided by this. Really should include that in the initial quote, if I'm honest. Third, the condition of the truck. While waiting to pick up our reservation, my partner and I got to sit there and listen to the Budget employee talk to another customer (someone who worked at the CDC, apparently) about how they made sure to clean up every truck and wipe it down as soon as it came in. As you can imagine, during a global pandemic, that kind of thing is more than a little important. So imagine our surprise when we get our truck home and inspect it further, only to find that it's dirty, full of crumbs and other debris. Clearly hadn't been cleaned at all. Overall, even if you get quoted a lower price for Budget, they're going to bump that up with the insurance, and they might just have neglected to do the bare minimum of actual cleaning of the truck. Go somewhere else.
I was not happy with the pick-up location. The drop-off was fine. When we picked up our truck, took it home to start loading with my belongings, we noticed a leak in the ceiling from the two corners closest to the cabin. It was not raining very hard but the water was pouring in profusely. Since I was moving to another state, the water would surely ruin every box and belonging before reaching our destination. I called the company back and they said "ALL of our trucks leak" and I told them that was unacceptable and they hung up on me and didn't offer to help. I eventually had to cover all of my items with tarps inside the truck to prevent as much damage as possible. A few of my boxes were so soaked when we arrived that they broke and disintegrated when we tried to lift them. This was just frustrating. I paid quite a bit of money and did not expect the workers to be so rude about a problem that I did not cause.
The truck arrived an hour and a half late and they did not have furniture covers as I had requested, which were understandable under the COVID-19 circumstances, but the tank was filled 3/4 full and I didn't notice they marked it as full until I dropped off. My bad, but annoying still. When I returned the vehicle, I was also told the gas gauge needed to show beyond full. I told them I filled it until it clicked, but they said my options were to pay $35.00 plus the cost of gas while I waited for them to go to the gas station, or go back myself and top it off. I opted to try myself, at which point I sprayed gas all over the place because it was already full. Coming back smelling like gasoline was enough for them to believe me that it was actually full.
I used Budget because they were recommended by the company for my new job. I rented a 16' truck and car carrier with unlimited miles. I was fortunate enough to get a year old truck, which averaged ~10 mpg. However, it did not do well with any type of incline, struggled accelerating and was loud and shaky in the cab, but all in all it got the job done so I can't complain. As for the car carrier, I had a broken taillight and one of the tires had a completely different rim size than the other 3, but once again it worked so I can't complain. I'd probably look into using Penske, but would not have an issue with using Budget again.
Drove from Omaha NE to Santa Fe NM all in one day... 16 long hours. The truck was slow and a very rough ride... but then that is what everyone told me to expect. Around Dodge City KS the truck started acting strange... the RPMs would rev up and the truck would not shift into the next gear... for more than a hour it would not move past 50-55 mph. All this on the flat pains of Kansas. I was worried that it would break down, and hoped to get to Dodge CIty KS where I could call for help. But within the hour, the truck returned to normal operations... moving along at 60-65 mpr. I arrived in Santa Fe without additional truck issues. Upon returning the truck to the Budget shop on 8:30 AM on a Monday morning... the customer service agent there was quite grumpy. I waited for 15 minutes while he did something in the shop for another customer. She didn't understand what was going on either. He could easily have said something like... "I'm finishing up this order and will be happy to help you in another 15 minutes". Budget... PLEASE give you team customer service training.
I've used Budget Truck rentals for many things over the years, e.g. to transport large canvases of art across town for my art business. This time I used them to move my home from Omaha to Santa Fe, rental a 26-ft truck one way. The team at Omaha, where I picked up the truck was great... but the team (one guy) at the end destination was not at all friendly and acted put-out at my arrival on the Monday morning when I returned the truck. In between, the truck ran 800 miles... in the middle of the trip the truck's RMP would rev without gaining speed. I was quite worried that I'd need to stop for repairs at the next city. But as quickly as the problem appeared, it disappeared. I was lucky. But wonder that the next person won't be so lucky.
Not sure why but the agent gave me the oldest truck on his lot! It was filthy inside with a layer of dirt & leaves as though the previous renter had moved trees & branches. The drivers seat was completely worn through in the back so I was sitting on a metal bar. It ran OK and fortunately I only had to drive it less than 20 miles total so once I swept it out myself it worked out ok. I’ve had better trucks from Budget in the past so hopefully this was just an anomaly
Reserved a truck 3 days in advance and when I arrived at the location to pick up my truck they told me they were all sold out. Called the corporate number who told me to drive 2+ hours to pick up another one and did not offer any type of compensation for the inconvenience. Told them to cancel my order & I went with Penske, MUCH BETTER customer service, same price and SUPER accommodating to my short time frame.
Normally, I have a great experience with budget. This time the truck was filthy and had a few minor dings, transmission issues going up hill, and they didn't have the truck and trailer ready on reservation date. The customer service was nice and their inventory management team helped out to locate the trailer closer to me for pick up. Although the truck sucked, the people made it a little better.
By far the cheapest truck rental I could find for a one-way trip. My truck was not ready for pickup at the scheduled pickup time. I called customer service and they offered to find the same truck nearby, but the original truck arrived while I was waiting for customer service. The truck was handed to me very dirty, probably because they didn't want it to be later than it already was. I made my trip from southern California to Oregon, but I wish the windshield wipers had worked better, it was hard to see at times. At the end of my transaction, I was compensated for the truck being late at pickup, so that was nice.
