Cargo van was clean and ran well. Unfortunately, the back door lock did not work. Because we were traveling 650 miles, which required an overnight stay at a hotel we had to rig up a system, using tie down straps to secure the back door from inside the van to prevent it from being opened up while left in the parking lot overnight.
This was my first time renting a cargo van and was nervous to drive a large van, especially for a long distance. The van had some wear to it, but the seats were surprisingly comfortable for the long drive. The staff in Charleston were very accommodating and friendly. My only complaint is that I never got a receipt when I dropped off the van in NY after hours.
My pick up location got changed because they didn't have the truck I reserved (they did offer a larger truck at no additional charge but I wasn't comfortable driving a larger truck). I dropped the truck off a day early and the guy at the counter said I could drop the key and go since he was waiting on a different customer. It's 3 days later and I haven't received confirmation it's closed. I was told to call back...
Truck has a governor on it that doesn't allow it to go very fast. I was passed by multiple Uhaul brand trucks. Suspension was good, nothing broken after going over several bumps and potholes. Gas mileage was terrible, I stopped every 250 miles on a 34-36 gallon tank, but I expected as much. I moved a one bedroom with dining room, living room, and storage closet and it fit everything. Ride wasn't bad, wish it had cruise control though.
They didn't have the truck ready at the location it was reserved but they did call us and let us know and found an alternative location. While we weren't thrilled, and it was a major pain, we understand that they have no control over another customer who may not return a truck as promised. We appreciate that they took the time to call around and find the nearest location with the same truck and honored our contract price. It was a pain but it got resolved in the long run -we lost a day of loading and that sux.
We had to organize within 24 hours a new moving truck with a car trailer, as Budget informed us the day before we needed the confirmed and booked equipment that it was not available. So we had to drive a significant detour, and they were not really engaged in finding a solution (the local person tried but without success).
We got a 16' truck with a car dolly to tow my wife's car. The truck was exactly what we needed & for a great price considering we traveled over 1000mi. We actually ended up getting a flat on the trailer though, & getting roadside assistance was a little difficult. Aside from that, using Budget Truck Rental was a great decision to help us move to our new home! When & if we need to move again, we will be using Budget!
1 star is too high. It was miserable. I had an 8am pickup appointment but the location did not open until 9. I had movers on the clock waiting. I was originally told I could leave my car for a few hours only to be denied and had to move it. I was told there was no night drop. I had a noon dropoff time only to find that same location was no open until 2pm. I had to drive back a second time to drop the key and was asked why I did not leave it in the night drop. Enraging!!! Never use Budget truck rental on Anderson Rd in Rock Hill, SC
Overall, I'm happy with my budget experience. I was frustrated when the truck I reserved wasn't available on the pick-up day/time and the truck they wanted to give me was much larger and had the check engine light on. However, we were able to go to another location and get the truck I originally wanted without any additional charge. Both service men I worked with were incredibly helpful. When I needed to return my truck after business hours, I was not charged any kind of fee and was able to drop the keys at a neighboring gas station. It was a positive experience in the end.
I booked my truck and movers over a month in advance. Budget confirmed my move two days before moving day and the day before moving day, yet dropped the ball completely on the big day. I showed up right on time, and they had zero trucks for me at that location or in the area. I was just told to call customer service. My movers- who I was paying by the hour, showed up on time with no truck to load. It was a nightmare. I finally gave up on customer service trying to find a solution and began calling every other moving truck company and location, I finally found another company last min. It cost me an additional $800 I had not budgeted for. Do not choose Budget. I couldn’t have planned and confirmed with them better, yet they still couldn’t figure it out. Very disappointed.

Everything was going great until I wanted to return my truck early. The location was closed. When I called customer service to see if there was another, open location to drop it off at, I was told that there was no other location open. I found out the next day - yes...there were two. This inability to return the vehicle early caused me extensive hassle and lost $$.
The set up and pick up of the truck was excellent but there was a small miscommunication on the drop off side. The time posted was incorrect and I had to go to their other location. Their customer service number tried to help but couldn't really do much as the sites were not answering. In the end everything turned out fine.
