U-Haul® Reviews
2 days before our move we were called and told our truck size was not available. We had to take a smaller truck which (fortunately) worked out. On the day of the return (to a different city, which we advised them of in advance), we got a call saying the location we were assigned to had too many vehicles in it and couldn’t accept our return. We were told to go to another location almost 25 minutes further away from the first. The condition of the truck was fine although they don’t sell padlocks at their rental locations (even though we’d been told they did) so that slowed things down as we had to head off to buy one.
The truck was good, and the price was the BEST, but the equipment ordered was not in the truck. And I was in a hurry, so had to go without what I ordered. The online check-in helps, but then you still have to stand in line inside to get the key, so not sure how the 'no need to stand in line' thing works.
Uhaul is fine - it generally depends on the franchise or corporate office you're picking up / dropping off at. Stars off for renting furniture pads which - spoiler alert- are never in the truck if it's not at an actual Uhaul location. Stars off for explaining this at drop off (Rt. 9G in Hyde Park) but still getting a charge for missing rental furniture pads. Stars back for a fairly quick process to get the cost refunded (20 mins of phone time).
One star off because the tow dolly's lights don't work and we didn't notice this until too late to contact Uhaul. Not sure yet how that will play out. Otherwise, excellent help from Uhaul at every level (phone help, plus the two local facility people we dealt with when we picked up the truck and tow dolly at two different places). Everyone was so helpful in smoothing out the glitches of location and timing, and also with the process of picking up the truck and hooking up the tow dolly (in the snow).
I rented a 20 foot box truck and the truck was ready when I arrived to pick it up. The truck was clean, although the windshield needed some cleaning for safe travel. The people I dealt with were very nice and explained everything to my satisfaction. I used U Haul because they offered a one way option for my move. I was a little disappointed in the location of my drop off point, as I passed at least 2 U Haul rental outlets while traveling to my appointed drop off point. I have used U Haul in the past and will use them again when the need arises.
The truck was clean and all equipment was in working order. Note you need a lock with a long U on it some facilities do not have these available to purchase. Truck does not have cruise control. I would use U Haul again. We moved from Florida to Michigan without any issues. 8 days from Florida to Michigan 15 foot truck with full insurance $1134
My first rental was with another company. When I showed up they said, "We don't do trucks." "But I have a reservation," I said. Their reply was, "We don't do trucks." "Well, then what do I do?" I asked. He handed me a pamphlet and said, "Call this number, they'll tell you were to get your truck." Feeling a little panic as my time was getting tight, I asked, "Could you call the company and help me find out where to go?" The answer was, "We don't do trucks." I will never work with Budget again. On top of it, they had lost my reservation earlier that day, I had rebooked it, they told me where to go, I confirmed three times it was there, every time I called there were long wait times, and when I got there to pick up my truck, all I got in response was, "We don't do trucks." (And the main office never told me where to find my truck.) Horrible business, horrible customer service. NOW, a quick call to U-Haul. Barely any on hold waiting. Courteous and incredibly helpful. A confirmation call from the location of the truck. Very welcoming and accommodating. Willing to be of service. Yeah, it's a big company. Yeah, I'm all about supporting the little guy. But with U-Haul, you will definitely get the support and service you need.
15' Truck and the Vehicle Transport Trailer. Hauled a 2013 BMW X5. Did fine - bogged-down to 45-ish MPH on only the steepest hills / grades. Ran 55-65 MPH on the highways. Vehicle Transport was easy to maneuver and was stable. Didn't seem to effect performance too much. Truck cab a bit cramped with 2 adults and 1 dog though. Need more space / storage in the cab and better seats / more adjustable.
